Prime Minister arrives in US for ASEAN-US summit

HA NOI (VNS) — Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and a high-level Vietnamese delegation arrived in California on February 14 (US time), to attend the special ASEAN-United States summit from February 15 to16.
The PM and his entourage were greeted at California’s Palm Spring Airport by Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States Pham Quang Vinh and representatives from the United States Department of State.
With the presence of the PM and the high-level delegation at the summit, Viet Nam intends to uphold its active and responsible role in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The country will also continue with efforts to help deepen the ASEAN-United States partnership and marshal American co-operation and support for the ASEAN in general and Viet Nam in particular in fields such as economy, science and technology, education and training and people-to-people exchanges, besides coping with transnational challenges, building capacity, expanding relations with partners, and strengthening the bloc’s central role in the regional structure, as well as maintaining peace and security in the region.
At the same time, the Vietnamese delegation will also work to promote relations between Viet Nam and the United States, especially co-operation in defence and security, science and technology, economic development and foreign investment attraction, besides the implementation of free trade agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
This summit is of special significance as it is the first summit between the bloc and a partner country after the official formation of the ASEAN Community on December 31, 2015.
This is also the first time the ASEAN-United States summit has been held in America, demonstrating the importance that both sides attach to their strategic partnership.
The summit will discuss the orientation for and measures to implement their strategic partnership in a result-oriented and specific manner, together with regional and international issues of common concern.
PM Nguyen Tan Dung is scheduled to join leaders of other ASEAN countries and the United States in debates on economy, trade, politics and security.
He will also hold bilateral meetings with leaders of several countries on the sidelines of the summit.
