Hanoi (dpa) – Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has personally congratulated US president-elect Donald Trump on his electoral victory during a phone call, the Vietnamese government announced Thursday.
„Trump spoke highly of the achievements Vietnam gained over the past time as well as the positive developments in the bilateral ties,“ a statement released on the Vietnamese government’s official online news site read, adding that the call took place Monday.
Trump also expressed a desire to improve relations and discussed „measures to strengthen economic, trade and investment ties,“ according to the statement.
Relations between the two former wartime foes have strengthened in recent years as both countries express concern over Chinese maritime claims and alleged military base building in the South China Sea.
On a state visit to Hanoi in May 2016, US President Barack Obama announced that the last US weapons sanctions against Vietnam, which had been in place since the Vietnam War, would be scrapped, potentially paving the way for arms sales to the South-east Asian nation
